What About Body Acne?

Sure, you've been plagued with little or big pimples on your face, and it's always been a major beauty alert. You've been worrying about it, and now, add more acne to your back, chest, and the sides of your arms? That's a major problem.

I really don't want to give a detailed explanation on how pores clog even on body skin (I'm sure you know that by now) but body acne can be caused by a lot of things, namely; stress, predisposed genes, hormones, and pore-clogging debris (and I'm not even talking about keratosis pilaris here---it's an entirely different thing). If you have hormonal fluctuations you can go and consult your dermatologist, but if you have oily, acne prone skin and you're stressing of those scattered little pimples that keep you from baring your shoulders, these are the things to consider:

1. Consider how you shampoo/condition your hair. Shampoos and conditioners, especially the moisturizing ones, can clog pores on the chest and back when it's being rinsed out. You may want to bend down a little when you rinse your hair so it doesn't reach your shoulders and back.

2. Hot water. Do you prefer warm showers? Maybe your water is too hot. This can also aggravate existing acne and will cause your pores to open more, hence its more susceptible to pore cloggers. Use warm water when lathering, then rinse it off with a blast of cold water to close pores and make you more refreshed and awake.

3. Moisturizing soaps. Maybe you're swayed with all the commercials of these cream soaps in the market but if you have oily skin, please limit its use on your arms, lower torso and legs, or those body parts with no acne. You don't need extra moisture on your acne-prone areas.

4. Body Scrubs? Scrubs can work for some, but personally I find that it will only aggravate the acne-prone areas, I mean, how will you scrub those red, inflamed pimples? Try products with BHA/salicylic acid instead, or scrubs with gentler beads. Personally, I prefer to exfoliate with papaya soap, like Mestiza (available in Mercury Drug). It sloughs off dead skin cells naturally and treats the acne.

Please feel free to comment if you have questions. :)
